WINDHOEK, 23 NOV (NAMPA) – President Hage Geingob has called on the people contesting positions for the Swapo party’s leadership, to rally behind those who win the elections.
Geingob said this at the opening of the 6th Swapo Ordinary Congress here on Thursday. The congress will on Sunday elect the top four leaders and new members of the party’s central committee to serve for the next five years.
Geingob said rules and principles have to be adhered to during the congress.
“In the spirit of Swapo party unity, once the contest is over and the winners have been announced, let us all rally behind the victors because it is not personalities that matter, it is principles that matter,” he said.
He noted that during national elections, there would be war between the Swapo party and other political parties, however, there should only be healthy competition within the ruling party which would result in a more resilient party.
Geingob stated that this is a momentous occasion and they are on the cusp of determining their destiny.
“The time is now for us to ensure that the legacy of our liberation struggle, the legacy of the Namibian revolution and the legacy of the mighty Swapo party shall continue,” the Namibian head of state urged.
Geingob said it is no secret that they currently find themselves in tumultuous times: “the geo-political climate is in a state of flux, the global economy is at cross roads, structural inequality is manifesting itself in the most heartbreaking ways, and the future is fraught with uncertainty”.
He said all these are contributing factors to the tension which has engulfed many liberation movements in Africa.
“Some would say that these factors have created the perfect storm – a storm we have not seen since the days of the liberation struggle and which tempts us to think things have changed.”
Geingob noted that change is a constant “so yes, things have changed but the Swapo party’s values remain the same”.
He appealed that now, more than ever in the midst of these challenging times, the mighty Swapo Party must show the doubters, the naysayers and the doom mongers that Swapo remains strong, united and stable.
The congress will come to an end after election results are announced.
