RUNDU, 19 NOV (NAMPA) – Team Swapo presidential candidate for the Swapo Party, Nahas Angula says he is not challenging anyone for the position of presidency, but is contesting it as the position is vacant.
Angula, during a Team Swapo rally held at Rundu on Saturday, was responding to a remark made by Team Harambee at one of their rallies that former Swapo presidents were never challenged for the position of presidency.
“We are not challenging anybody in any case as there is no one in that position, but let me explain. The Swapo Party constitution gives the right for every member to vote and to be voted for and to avail themselves in any position of the party,” he said.
Angula said people should distinguish between the party and Government.
“We are not contesting the presidency of the Republic of Namibia. We are contesting the presidency of Swapo,” he added.
The former Prime Minister said President Hage Geingob will remain the national Head of State of the country until his term ends or until further notice.
According to Angula, while Team Swapo supports him as the country’s President, the position of the party president remains open.
Meanwhile, Angula went on to comment on the name, Team Harambee, saying that the term ‘Harambee’ is a word borrowed from Kenya, meaning pulling in the same direction.
“If the Harambee term cannot solve Kenyan problems, how will it solve Namibian problems?” he asked.
The rally was attended by former ministers such as Richard Kamwi, Lempy Lucas, Isak Katali, Moses Amweelo, Peter Iilonga, Ngarikutuke Tjiriange and Rosalia Nghidinwa.
Fumu Erwin Munika Mbambo of the Hambukushu Traditional Authority and Hompa Alfons Kaundu of the Mbunza Traditional Authority as well as business personalities such as Desmond Amunyela and Vaino Nghipondoka were in attendance.
More than 500 people, including Swapo members from the Hardap Region, attended the rally.
