ONGWEDIVA, 14 NOV (NAMPA) – Urban and Rural Development Minister Sophia Shaningwa on Monday unveiled 20 streets named after Namibian heroes and heroines at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region.
Some of those honoured are the late Swapo Party politicians, Jackson Kakwambi, Jackson Kaujeua, Anton Lubowski, John Pandeni, Dr Abraham Iyambo, Julia Nepembe, Reverend Theophilus Hamutumbangela, Gaus Shikomba, Putuse Appolus and Bishop Leonard Auala.
A veteran businessman at Ongwediva, Simon Hashiyana, is the only living personality a street was named after.
The streets naming unveiling was conducted in the presence of relatives of those remembered.
“It is indeed amazing to be here once again, to unveil street names in honour of Namibian heroes and heroines,” said Shaningwa, who described the event as a significant development in the history of Ongwediva.
She expressed gratitude to family members of those heroes and heroines for having accepted the honour bestowed upon their late relatives.
“It is now time for the council to vigorously name streets within various extensions across the town of Ongwediva for the benefit of its residents,” noted the minister.
She also suggested that the Ongwediva Town Council take a deliberate commitment to ensure that all streets at the town are named in the next five years.
Shaningwa said it is a well-known fact that street naming provides clear direction to the general public, through various forms of navigation to places of reference.
