SWAKOPMUND, 03 NOV (NAMPA) - A 23-year-old man died from injuries sustained when he was run over by a front end loader operated by a colleague at a mining site outside Karibib on Thursday.
The accident occured between 15h00 and 16h00 at the Chinese Best Cheer Marble mining site, about 10 kilometres outside Omaruru.
Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Namibian Police Force in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu said in a crime report on Friday the mine employee was driving the loader uphill when he accidentally ran over his colleague.
“He drove over his lower body, which caused a fractured right leg, open cut wound on his private parts and fractured pelvic.”
The suspect is charged with culpable homicide.
Iikuyu said the man was rushed to the Usakos State Hospital and was later transferred to Mediclinic Swakopmund for further treatment.
“While they were preparing to further transfer him to another hospital in Walvis Bay at about 22h22, he succumbed to his injuries,” Iikuyu said in the report.
His next of kin have not yet been informed and further investigations into the matter continue.
