WINDHOEK, 08 NOV (NAMPA) - A truck driver employed by the Neels van Zyl transport company died on Friday afternoon when his truck was allegedly involved in a collision with another truck on the Okahandja-Otjiwarongo main road in the Otjozondjupa Region.
The truck driver, whose identity cannot be made public as the police are yet to officially inform his next of kin, died a few minutes upon his arrival at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Otjozondjupa Regional Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Maureen Mbeha told Nampa on Friday afternoon the accident took place between 12h00 and 13h00, some 78 kilometres outside Okahandja on the 'accident-prone Okahandja-Otjiwarongo main road.'
According to Mbeha, the two trucks, one belonging to the Neels van Zyl transport company and the other to the Ankar transport company, were travelling in the same direction towards Otjiwarongo when the accident occurred.
About 78 kilometres from Okahandja, the Neels van Zyl company’s truck, which had been in front, made a right turn. The driver of the other truck, which had been driving behind the Neels van Zyl truck, unfortunately did not immediately notice the other truck turning right and drove into its side.
The now deceased driver was thrown out of the vehicle as a result of the impact of the collision.
The driver of the Ankar truck sustained minor injuries.
An investigation team from the police was at the scene of the accident on Friday afternoon collecting the evidence which would help them to establish the exact cause of the accident.
