WINDHOEK, 25 OCT (NAMPA) – The Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF) will host the National 3x3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Basketball Artists School situated at the Multi-purpose youth complex in Katutura.
The three-on-three or three-by-three tournament will help NBF select a team that will represent Namibia at the National Finals 3x3 Young Lions Cup in Botswana on 29 November 2017.
Speaking to Nampa on Wednesday, Malakia Matias, the NBF’s development officer, said preparations are at an advanced stage and called on basketball lovers to come support their teams.
“This is the grand finale as we went to Oshana, Erongo and Khomas regions selecting teams,” he said, adding they want to select one female team and one male team of four players each.
The NBF has been holding 3x3 tournaments throughout the country since the beginning of the year, selecting the top three teams in each of the regions to participate in this weekend’s national tournament.
Matias added that the response to 3x3 basketball has been magnificent following the introduction of the sport in the Olympic Games.
“The young ones are very keen to play the tournament. The under 18s have been fantastic, but the younger age groups are also itching to play an organised tournament,” he added.
The NBF plans to have more tournaments next year.
Matias said the simplicity and informal format of the game, which does not require a full court or a coach, has increased demand with fans.
The tournament, sponsored by Streethouse, OTB Sports, and Fresh FM, is scheduled to start at 12h00 and end at 18h00.
The National Finals 3x3 Young Lions Cup will feature players from Namibia, Botswana, Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.
