RUNDU, 17 OCT (NAMPA) – G 'n B Football Club (FC) were on Saturday crowned champions of the Steven Mungongi Football League which recently concluded in the Musese Constituency of the Kavango West Region.
The football club won all their 14 league games to walk away with N.dollars 5 000 including a trophy and medals that were sponsored by Steven Mungongi, an emerging entrepreneur and chairperson of the league.
Mungongi who teamed up with the constituency league in support of the development of the game in the area, said he was happy that the league went well and a champion was crowned.
He said by sponsoring the league he was not trying to promote himself but to uplift sports in the area.
He called on all other emerging entrepreneurs in the region to invest in sports in rural areas as this would help the locals and nurture rural talent.
“Although everything went well, the other thing we want for the league is it to be recognised by the Namibia Football Association (NFA),” said Mungongi.
G ‘n B won the league with a total of 42 points. They were followed by Mayenzere Chiefs with 36 points who walked away with N.dollars 3 000 and medals.
In third place was Rupara United with 34 points walking away with N.dollars 2 000.
Coach of the winning team, Julias Ndongo commended the sponsor for supporting local football and said other business people should follow suit.
He added that his team winning the league was not a walk in the park but rather a result of hard work.
“I got these players when they were still young and through training and hard work, we managed to win the league in a row now,” said the coach.
Olavi Sivhute from G ‘n B Football Club was named Player of the Season while Johannes Kasindoro Hausiku won Chairman Player of the Season award.
The Top Goal Scorer award was given to Sikondomboro Alberto who scored 28 goals throughout the season also from G ‘n B FC.
The champions are expected to feature in the play-offs which can give them a promotion to the second division.
However, since the second division football league was not played this year, the date for the play-offs is still to be announced.
