SWAKOPMUND, 16 OCT (NAMPA) - Vice-President Nickey Iyambo on Monday declared that he supports Urban and Rural Development Minister Sophia Shaningwa for the Swapo party Secretary-General (SG) position.
“I have nothing to hide anymore, since the names of the candidates are out already, this is to also show who I think should be voted for in this specific race,” Iyambo said here on Monday during the first joint annual general meeting of leaders from various local authorities in Africa to deliberate on better service delivery mechanisms.
The Swapo Special Central Committee meeting on Sunday endorsed Shaningwa and Regional Coordinator for Oshikoto, Armas Amukwiyu to contest the SG position.
Iyambo said the past week was very busy and tough for them as Swapo leaders as they tried to choose the best candidates who could be the next leaders of the party and country.
He said he was happy that they managed to choose what he called the best leaders, despite concerns by citizens that the party leadership was at loggerheads and might not reach a reasonable conclusion.
However, Iyambo is concerned that the tensions regarding the elections could turn ugly.
“We were busy picking at each other. Politics is tough at times like these, but we hope no blood will be shed during these elections. Let the best men and women win.”
Other candidates are Minister of Youth Jerry Ekandjo and former Prime Minister Nahas Angula who will challenge President Hage Geingob for party president.
Deputy Prime Minister and International Relations Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration, Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana and Swapo Secretary for Information and Mobilisation, Helmuth Angula will contest the party vice presidency.
Businesswoman Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun, Petrina Haingura (former Swapo Women’s Council secretary) and Marco Hausiku, Swapo party school rector, will contest for the deputy SG position.
The elective congress is slated for 23 to 26 November in the capital.
