WINDHOEK, 16 OCT (NAMPA) Namibian long distance runner Leena Ekandjo finished third in the 2017 Wizz Air Sofia Marathon in Bulgaria on Sunday.
The Namibian ran a time of two hours, 42 minutes and 26 seconds (2:42:26) to finish just one minute and 56 seconds behind the winner, Ruth Matebo from Kenya.
Matebos compatriot Koech Cherono ended second, just three seconds slower.
Other countries that participated in the marathon are Gambia, Ukraine, Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Austria, Macedonia, Russia, Switzerland, Slovakia and Greece.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, Ekandjos coach Tobias Hiskia said she did well by finishing third amongst some of the worlds best athletes.
He said he is positive that she can improve, judging by the time she set on Sunday.
Her manager told me it was really hot in Bulgaria but she ran well and we are now going to focus on her time being reduced to 2:30:00. That is her goal at the moment and I am confident that she will do it, said Hiskia.
Ekandjo is managed by Charles Paanakker from the Netherlands.
Over 2 600 professional and non-professional athletes competed in the 11th the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon in the three kilometre (km), 10.5 km, 21km and 42km categories.
The marathon is sponsored by Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in central and eastern Europe.
