WINDHOEK, 06 OCT ( NAMPA) – President Hage Geingob on Friday revealed his preferred candidates for the Swapo-party’s top four positions, opting to go with veteran party members.
He made the announcement during his address at the opening of the party’s politburo meeting here.
A statement issued to the media after the event said that while confirming his availability to contest the party’s presidency, Geingob chose Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as his candidate for the vice-president position.
He nominated Minister of Urban and Rural Development Sophia Shaningwa for the position of secretary-general (SG), while Swapo veteran Marco Hausiku is listed as preferred candidate for the deputy SG portfolio.
Geingob, however, announced that nominations by party members for the various positions will only be done on Thursday during the next meeting of the politburo
He urged party members to exercise their democratic right by electing their preferred candidates for the various portfolios during the upcoming Swapo congress slated for end of November.
Geingob, however, cautioned against dirty campaigning, noting that campaigning should be about issues and not personalities.
“We are now launching our campaign. It should be a robust campaign, characterised by the presentation of concrete proposals to take the country forward,” he said.
The president said in all democratic elections, it is common for factions to develop as respective candidates, vie for support and ascendancy.
However, after contest, everyone should rally behind the winner, he noted.
“It is easy for everyone to rally behind the winner if the contestants played the ball and not the man,” he said.
