Omupanda CS parents not happy with extra classes on Sundays

ONGWEDIVA, 24 SEP (NAMPA) – The Education Director in the Oshana Region, Hileni Amukana has said extra classes for learners to do revision should be conducted with the consent of parents.
The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture permits teachers to conduct extra classes, especially for learners who are about to write their Grade 10 and 12 final examinations.
Amukana was responding to complaints by some parents of learners at Omupanda Combined School (CS), who said teachers are exploiting their children by making them attend extra classes on Sundays.
“Our children are kept too busy with classes, without the weekend off, and they don’t have the chance to attend church,” the parents argued, demanding that extra classes on Sundays be abolished.
The education director, in an interview with Nampa here on Thursday, however said extra classes are never imposed on the learners.
“If a parent does not want his or her child to attend extra classes or feels that the child should not go to school for classes on Sunday, then such parent is free to notify the teachers or school management for a child to be exempted,” Amukana stated.
Omupanda, Amukana said, is not the only school conducting extra classes for Grade 10 and 12 as the practice applies to all schools in the region.
Omupanda CS is situated in the Oshana Region.
