WINDHOEK, 06 SEP (NAMPA) – The by-election for the Eengodi Constituency in the Oshikoto Region will be conducted on 18 November 2017 to fill the vacancy left by councillor, Walde Sheyavali who died last month at Ongwediva.
According to the Electoral Act, No. 5 of 2014, an election to fill a political office that has become vacant between general elections, must take place within 90 days of the position becoming vacant.
Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) Director of Elections, Paul Isaak told Nampa upon enquiry on Tuesday, the election process would start with the supplementary registration of voters from 11 to 14 September 2017.
The nomination of candidates will then follow on 22 September, after which the ECN will wait for a ruling by one of the magistrate’s courts in the region.
Isaak said once the election nominees have been cleared by the court, a first level check on the electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be done, whereby all political parties will be invited to verify the working conditions of the electronic devices.
The late Sheyavali was Oshikoto’s regional councillor since 1992, a position he held uncontested.
“We hope this time more interest will come from other political parties,” Isaak said.
He indicated that should only one political party contest the position, then the ECN will immediately announce that party’s candidate as the winner on 09 October.
The Oshikoto Region has 11 constituencies: Eengodi; Guinas; Okankolo; Olukonda; Omuntele; Omuthiyagwiipundi; Onayena; Oniipa; Onyaanya; Tsumeb and Nehale lyaMpingana.
