OTJIWARONGO, 05 AUG (NAMPA) - A 30-year-old man survived a burning vehicle that caught fire while driving on the road between Otavi and Otjiwarongo on Monday afternoon.
Paulus Kakunde told Nampa at the scene he saw through the rear-view mirror that the right rear tyre was burning and pulled off the road before the Volkswagen Golf 4 burnt to ashes.
“I was alone travelling from Grootfontein to Windhoek and luckily I am not hurt,” he said.
Kakunde suspects the wheel bearing might have experienced mechanical problems and the tyre caught fire while the vehicle was in motion.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha confirmed the incident on Tuesday morning.
Mbeha said the incident occurred at approximately 18h00, some 45 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo on the B1 road.
“We received that report of a navy blue Golf that caught fire while moving from the direction of Otavi to Otjiwarongo, and it burned to ashes,” she said.
