KATIMA MULILO, 28 AUG (NAMPA) – The Oshana Region’s Youth Forum Chairperson, Ephraim Nekongo was officially declared the new Secretary of the Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL) late Sunday night.
He will be deputised by Christine Haindaka.
Nekongo and Haindaka won the elections uncontested at the sixth SPYL congress that started last Thursday and ended Sunday night at Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region.
They were sworn-in in the presence of other youth league members shortly after the announcement was made.
Thirty youth league central committee members and 13 regional SPYL secretaries were also sworn in at the same event.
“Collectively, we are going to take the leadership of this organ to higher levels,” Nekongo said after being sworn in.
He said going forward, he wants to see genuine unity, progressive thinking and economic emancipation among the youth.
The newly elected youth leader said his team will rally behind President Hage Geingob as candidate for the position of Swapo president at the party’s congress in November.
The new youth leaders are expected to lead the party’s youth wing for the next five years.
Outgoing acting SPYL secretary, Veikko Nekundi thanked all members who attended the congress for contributing to the success of the event.
President Hage Geingob on Thursday officially opened the sixth SPYL congress and called on those in attendance to uphold the principles of Swapo.
He said the party’s youth league must remain “active, revolutionary and a militant transmission belt of the party’s political ideologies, policies and programmes”.
