Kalkrand pensioner dies in shack fire

MARIENTAL, 26 AUG (NAMPA) – A 72-year-old pensioner died when a fire gutted her shack at Kalkrand in the Hardap Region on Saturday.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Regional Commander for Hardap, John Lifasi confirmed that Christina Garises died in the fire at 10h19.
“Erf 396 in Kalkrand’s Donkerhoek settlement was engulfed by the fire, killing the pensioner,” he said.
The cause of fire is unknown and police investigations continue.
No other casualties were reported and the next of kin of the deceased were informed of her death.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity claimed that the Fire Brigade arrived almost an hour after the shack was destroyed.
“I believe she could have been saved had they arrived on time,” he said.
