OSHAKATI, 26 AUG (NAMPA) – Thousands of people from across the country have filled the Oshakati Independence Stadium for the Heroes Day commemorations.
Dressed in the colourful colours of the Namibian flag, the spectators started arriving at the stadium from as early as 07h00.
They were entertained by the likes of the Ndilimani Cultural Troupe, Bullet Ya Kaoko and Shikololo while they waited for the dignitaries to arrive.
Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sophia Shaningwa and Information and Communication Technology Minister, Tjekero Tweya are directing the event.
Attending the event amongst others are the two former presidents, Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba, Vice President Nickey Iyambo and Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila.
President Hage Geingob is the keynote speaker.
Heroes Day commemorates the battle of Omugulugwombashe on 26 August 1966, when South African soldiers attacked People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) fighters, marking the start of Namibia’s liberation struggle.
This year’s commemorations coincide with two other big events in the Oshana Region - the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair and Olufuko Cultural Festival.
