OTJIWARONGO, 22 AUG (NAMPA) - A boy whose age and identity are unknown died instantly when an Iveco bus he was travelling in overturned outside Otjiwarongo in the early hours of Tuesday.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha told Nampa at the scene that 27 other occupants in the same bus survived the accident with slight to serious injuries.
The victims were all taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital for medical attention shortly after the accident.
Mbeha said a total of 28 occupants including the 36-year-old driver were involved in the road accident.
She said the Iveco bus was travelling from the capital to Oshakati and at approximately 40 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo on the Otavi road the bus allegedly drove into the rear wheel of a slow moving truck.
“The bus driver then lost control over it and overturned, killing a boy on the spot,” she said.
The deceased’s identity and age have not yet been established.
The road accident occurred at about 01h00, Mbeha said, while calling on all long distance public transport operators to rest enough before starting their journeys and operate with the assistance of co-drivers.
Police investigations continue.
