WINDHOEK, 13 AUG (NAMPA) The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) during an anti-poaching operation on Friday caught four men with 26 suspected unpolished diamonds at Kasote village in the Kavango East Region.
NamPol Spokesperson, Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi in a crime report on Sunday said the suspects were arrested following an intelligence-led investigation and search.
The four suspects were also caught with eight elephant tusks, one pangolin skin and one hyena skin with a combined estimated value of N.dollars 4 million. The value of the 26 objects suspected to being unpolished diamonds is not yet known.
The three Namibians aged 38, 41 and 45, and an Angolan aged 43 will appear in the Rundu Magistrates Court on Monday.
In the Omusati Region, 28-year-old Thomas Tuleipo from Oshipumbu village died on the spot when the vehicle he was traveling in crashed into a tree on Saturday at about 20h55.
The unlicensed driver, a 27-year-old woman, allegedly lost control of the vehicle and hit the tree.
Shikwambi said a friend of the driver who arrived at the scene before the police, allegedly removed her from the vehicle and hid her at a house in Oshakati, Oshana Region.
She had minor injuries, so when the family members took her to Oshakati State Hospital, she was arrested there, said Shikwambi.
The deceaseds next of kin have been informed, whilst the driver and the friend were arrested and are expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrates Court on Monday.
In a separate incident, 46-year-old Lazarus Matheus died after his 17-year-old stepson at Ombili location in the Hardap Region on Saturday allegedly stabbed him with a sharp object on the left-rear shoulder.
The incident happened at about 21h11 when the stepson allegedly acted in defence of his mother, who the deceased allegedly assaulted.
The suspect was arrested and police investigations into the matter continue.
Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man at Khorixas in the Kunene Region allegedly raped a six-year-old girl on Thursday, but the incident was reported to police on Saturday.
The girl reportedly went to see her sister, who was cohabiting with her boyfriend, after school when he allegedly took her into the nearby bushes and raped her.
He was arrested and is expected to appear before the Khorixas Magistrates Court on Monday.
Police investigations continue.
