OTJIWARONGO, 13 AUG (NAMPA) – A 46-year-old professional hunter from Argentina was Saturday afternoon attacked and killed by an elephant at Farm Mopane in the Kalkfeld District.
Jose Monzalvez worked for an oil company in his country and was in Namibia for trophy hunting in the said area.
Namibian Police Force Spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha confirmed the incident to Nampa on Sunday.
Mbeha said the tragic incident occurred at about 16h30 on the private farm situated about 70 kilometres northwest of Kalkfeld.
“His close relatives have been informed of his death,” she said.
Mbeha said preliminary police investigations indicate that five professional trophy hunters – three Namibians and two Argentines were following a herd of elephants on the farm.
One of the elephants allegedly saw the hunters from a distance and before they could locate a proper spot from where to aim and shoot at the identified elephant they had to kill, the chase started.
The elephant allegedly chased after them, aiming for Monzalvez. He was trampled to death.
“The deceased was a professional hunter who had a hunting permit with him,” Mbeha said.
An inquest docket has been opened at the Kalkfeld Police Station.
Police investigations continue.
