OMUTHIYA, 09 AUG (NAMPA) The three times postponed Swapo-party Oshikoto Regional Conference finally kicked off Wednesday at Omuthiya after it was delayed for several hours because of alleged non-approval of Armas Amukoto to contest the regional treasurer position.
Swapo-party Head Office declined to approve Amukoto, who served as Oshikoto regional councillor for the Omuthiya Constituency until the last Regional and Local Authorities Election to challenge the sitting treasurer, Engel Nawatiseb.
Secretary for Information and Mobilisation in the Oshikoto Region, Quito Mulunga told Nampa that the refusal for Amukoto to contest for the treasurer position remains unclear to the regional leadership of the party.
Nawatiseb, who is also the Deputy Minister of the State Owned Enterprises, is now to be elected unopposed.
Oshikoto has become the battle of Quito Cuanavale in independent Namibia, said the Swapo-party Oshikoto regional coordinator Armas Amukwiyu in his welcoming remarks, adding it was not easy for their regional conference to take place.
The holding of the Swapo-party Oshikoto regional conference was postponed on several occasions as a result of alleged irregularities that took place during the regions district conferences.
However, Mulunga told the delegates that the conference was postponed because Amukwiyu is regarded by some individuals in the party as a lion.
Delegates from Swapo-party districts of Okankolo, Omuntele, Guinas, Tsumeb, Eengodi, Oniipa, Olukonda, Omuthiya, Onayena, Onyaanya and Nehale lyaMpingana are attending the conference.
Mulunga introduced the former secretary of the Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL), Elijah Ngurare, and businessman, Desmond Amunyela, as attending the conference on the basis of solidarity with the regional leadership.
Ex-chairperson of the Oshikoto Regional Council, Marx Nekongo is to challenge Amukwiyu, while Saara Shikokola and Anna Nepolo are the candidates for the regional secretary for information and mobilisation position.
The conference is being held under the theme: Swapo-party is Our Heritage and was officially opened by Swapo-party politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
