WINDHOEK, 08 AUG (NAMPA) – The Swapo Party Oshikoto Regional Conference, postponed three times for unknown reasons, will be held in Omuthiya on Wednesday.
A media invitation to the event received Tuesday indicates that the unknown matter or matters were resolved by the joint regional executive committee meeting held on Sunday.
The ruling party’s leadership had in the past directed the conference’s postponement.
During Wednesday's conference a new leadership for the region, including the regional co-ordinator, will be elected. Armas Amukwiyu is currently the regional coordinator.
The conference will also elect candidates to participate in the upcoming watershed Swapo congress slated for later this year. The congress will confirm President Hage Geingob as party president.
During the year, several Swapo regional conferences were called off and some were re-run due to irregularities detected. The regions where elections were postponed due to irregularities, include Omaheke, Kavango West and Oshana.
The Swapo Party Political Bureau established a verification team last month to validate the constitutionality of the processes followed during the Oshikoto Region’s conference.
The team, which consists of four members, was also assigned to establish the validity of the complaints brought against leaders assigned to the region as well as the alleged division between the Oshikoto Regional Executive Committee and some regional councillors.
Swapo leaders assigned to Oshikoto include Laura McLeod-Katjirua as chairperson; Alpheus !Naruseb and Charles Namoloh.
The conference will be officially opened by political bureau member Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is also part of the team assigned to the region.
