WINDHOEK, 26 JUL (NAMPA) – The just recalled Swapo Member of Parliament, Bernadus Swartbooi is expected to hold a media conference on Thursday in the capital.
Swartbooi was withdrawn from the National Assembly by the Swapo party with immediate effect on Wednesday.
Swapo Secretary-General Nangolo Mbumba made the announcement of Swartbooi’s recall on Wednesday, saying “the reasons for Swartbooi’s withdrawal are self-evident in his conduct, utterances and general attitude expressed in the public towards the party, its functionaries and Government on diverse occasions on various matters”.
At a gala dinner for the Landless Peoples’ Movement on Saturday evening in Keetmanshoop, Swartbooi told guests, “It is a known fact that I am 99.9 per cent not Swapo”, adding he would resign from the ruling party within 30 seconds after being fired.
“Swartbooi’s replacement will be announced in due course by the Speaker of the National Assembly Peter Katjavivi,” Mbumba said.
The party will likely select the next candidate on the party list, who is Paula Kooper.
Swartbooi was in position 75 on the list.
Swartbooi was fired as Land Reform Deputy Minister late last year, after he refused to comply with President Hage Geingob’s directive to publicly apologise to Land Reform Minister Utoni Nujoma for comments he made against him during a traditional festival at Hoachanas.
Before the deputy minister portfolio, Swartbooi served as Governor for the //Kharas Region from December 2010 to March 2015.
Previously, the law graduate and qualified teacher had worked as a public prosecutor and later as special assistant to the late deputy Prime Minister (PM) Hendrik Witbooi, followed by former deputy PM Libertina Amathila.
After political differences with the latter, he was moved to serve as a legal advisor in the Office of the Prime Minister.
When his contract ended, Swartbooi worked in the Swapo-party office while serving on the Swapo-Party Youth League executive committee.
