WINDHOEK, 24 JUL (NAMPA) – The Namibia Water Corporation (Namwater) on Monday started releasing water from the Hardap Dam in order to augment supply at the Neckartal Dam for construction purposes.
In a media statement issued Monday, NamWater’s Acting Head of Public Relations, Marketing and Corporate Communications, Hieronymus Goraseb said this is to ensure that the project does not experience a water shortage due to limited water resources.
The dam is being built near Keetmanshoop.
“During consultations with stakeholders an analysis was done and it was decided that releasing water from this dam would be a more viable option to resolve water shortages at the project under the current circumstances,” Goraseb said.
The rate of release will be limited to a volumetric rate to prevent any damage to agricultural fields or private property in Mariental, where the Hardap Dam is located, he added.
The corporation has urged the public to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety and prevent damage to or loss of assets that may be located near the river.
“Sufficient water will still be available to continue with usual irrigation for 18 months as from 01 August this year,” Goraseb said.
