MARIENTAL, 03 JUL (NAMPA) – PK De Villiers from Keetmanshoop on Sunday defied the odds and won the second edition of the Annual Inter Regional football games held in Mariental over the weekend.
The match against Rooiduin Junior Secondary from Aranos ended zero all in normal time, and went into penalties to determine the winning team of the match which saw Aranos struggle on.
The boys from Keetmanshoop showed composure by converting all five spot kicks and won the match 5-4.
An exhilarating start to the first half saw Keetmanshoop pin Rooiduin to their half of the field, with PK De Villiers making their intentions clear two minutes into the game.
Elroy “Di Maria” Basson made an aggressive kick towards Rooiduin goalkeeper Josef Matheus, who managed to save the ball.
The early scare did not deter the Aranos boys’ performance and instead motivated them to the point of Smithley Rooinasie heading wide from a Riaan Guandom cross after 12 minutes.
Aranos had three clear goal scoring chances during the first 20 minutes but Matheus was up to the challenge as he denied Basson the scoring opportunities.
The first half ended goalless and the second half started with PK De Villiers’ midfielder Roberto Uth pulling the strings like a seasoned professional. He sprayed the defence with splitting passes to his forwards, who on numerous occasions wasted chance after chance.
Both teams continued to play with greater intensity after the restart, but goal scoring chances were few and far between.
Ultimately, both teams were forced to settle for a share of the spoils and the winner had to be decided via spot kicks. PK De Villiers was crowned champions for the first time.
Prior to the final, the Keetmanshoop school eliminated Mariental High School B team in the quarter-finals by 5 goals to 2 and last year’s winners, Mariental High School A team, 6-5 on penalties after the game ended one all in normal time.
Rooiduin made mincemeat of St. Theresse from Tses in the semi-final with a score of 5-2 prior to defeating Omitara Football Academy 3-1 in the quarter final.
A total of 48 goals were scored during the weekend.
The event will again take place in Mariental next year.
