OTJIWARONGO, 30 JUN (NAMPA) – The position of Swapo Otjozondjupa region co-ordinator will be contested at the party’s regional conference here on Sunday.
The position has been occupied by Susan Hikopua since July 2012.
Hipokua in an interview with Nampa on Friday said the conference is expected to also elect candidates to fill the positions of mobiliser and treasurer.
The position of mobiliser has been vacant since the death of former Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, Rapama Kamehozu in March 2013.
Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor, Julius Neumbo is the party’s treasurer for the region.
The conference will also nominate party members as delegates to the 2017 Swapo national congress in November this year.
Nearly 40 delegates from all seven districts - Okahandja, Okakarara, Otjiwarongo, Otavi, Grootfontein, Omatako and Tsumkwe - will attend and participate in the election at the conference, starting at 10h00 on Sunday.
Several national leaders assigned to the region, amongst others Member of Parliament Faustina Caley, Minister of Higher Education Dr Itah Kandjii-Murangi, Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services Juliet Kavetuna and Deputy Minister of Finance, Natangwe Ithete will observe the election exercise.
The Otjiwarongo district will on Saturday also hold its extra-ordinary district conference to elect delegates to the regional conference and elect its district coordinator and mobiliser.
The position of Otjiwarongo district coordinator became vacant after the death of Jefta Veripi Kasuto in September 2016.
Otjozondjupa Governor Otto Ipinge is the Otjiwarongo district mobiliser.
Hikopua said both the district and regional political positions automatically become vacant after a period of five years and need to be contested.
She, however, refused to reveal the names of the people contesting both positions.
