WINDHOEK, 27 JUN (NAMPA) - The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) on Tuesday announced the Welwitschias squad that will face Tunisia in the 2017 Rugby Africa Gold Cup tournament.
The game will be played in Monastir, Tunisia on Saturday.
The Rugby Africa Gold Cup, formerly known as the Africa Cup, is organised by Rugby Africa.
The six-team competition is played on a round-robin basis from June to August.
This is a very important tournament for Namibia, keeping in mind the qualification for the 2019 Rugby World Cup during 2018.
A statement availed to Nampa by the NRU on Tuesday said Namibia has to maintain its place at the top to ensure that qualification is less challenging.
The Namibian players travelling to Tunisia are Collen Smith, AJ de Klerk, Desiderius Sethie, Shaun du Preez, Orbert Nortje, Louis van der Westhuizen, Casper Viviers, Max Katjijeko, Mahepisa Tjeriko, Ruan Ludick, Thomasau Forbes, Wian Conradie, Rohan Kitshoff (Captain), Christo van der Merwe, Eugene Jantjies (Vice Captain), Damian Stevens, Lesley Klim, Darryl de la Harpe, Justin Newman, Gino Wilson, Johann Tromp, Helarius Kisting, David Philander and Chrysander Botha.
The national team will travel to Monastir on Wednesday to play their first match in the 2017 Rugby Africa Gold Cup tournament on Saturday.
The statement said due to studies, injuries, family crises and other commitments, 13 players were not available for the tour.
This however creates an opportunity for a number of new players to be exposed to the national team set-up. We congratulate these players and look forward to a very exciting match against Tunisia, read the statement.
Kwese Sport will broadcast the Welwitschias matches, through an agreement signed with the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).
