WINDHOEK, 27 JUN (NAMPA) – Brave Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti is excited to be part of the team participating in the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup currently underway in South Africa.
Speaking during a media conference in Windhoek on Tuesday, where he announced the 22-man squad to participate in the tournament, Mannetti said Cosafa is an important tournament for southern Africa.
“I look at this tournament as medicine for a football nation that has all these problems, hence it is important for us to perform well and lift the trophy,” he said.
He added that Namibia stands to benefit if the team performs well, because it will strengthen their belief and hope that football will return to local stadia.
Mannetti said the euphoria of winning the cup will have massive effects in the streets and on the administrators, and help everyone move forward.
Namibia won the 2015 edition of the Cosafa Cup in Rustenburg, South Africa by beating Mozambique in the final.
They won the plate final last year on home soil after beating Zambia by one goal to nil.
Mannetti revealed that Hendrik Somaeb is still awaiting clearance from the South African immigration officials after he was banned from that country following alleged overstaying.
The coach remain optimistic that the player will be cleared to join the rest of the team.
Namibia will kick off the 2017 edition in Rustenburg on Saturday against Lesotho in the quarter-finals with the hope of progressing into the semi-finals.
The tournament started Sunday and ends 09 July.
