ONGWEDIVA, 25 OCT (NAMPA) – This year’s Penehupifo Pohamba Marathon is set to take place on the road between Oshivelo and Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region this Saturday.
Local marathon runner Gabriel Simon Shokonawa has teamed up with Ohangwena Constituency Councillor Maria Kombwana to organise this year’s marathon.
The event consists of different categories - five kilometres (km) for veterans; 10km for junior boys and girls; 21,1km for senior boys and girls; and the main contest of 42,2km.
Shokonawa is anticipated to participate in the 42,2km race.
“The marathon will kick off at 07h30 on Saturday morning and athletes will be running alongside the Oshivelo-Tsumeb B1 road,” Shokonawa told Nampa in an interview here on Thursday.
He pointed out that athletes from the 3 000-member San community of the Ondera Farm, which is situated some 40km from Oshivelo towards the east, will also take part in the marathon as part of their upliftment programme under the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).
The Penehupifo Pohamba Marathon was introduced a year ago.
The marathon was last August held in the Berg Aukas area of the Otjozondjupa Region, and it was officially launched by Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development Minister Charles Namoloh.
“Only Namibian athletes participated last year, but this year athletes from Angola will form part of the 260 runners who have thus far confirmed their participation,” Shokonawa said.
The Namibia Diamond Trading Company sponsored the competition with N.dollars 100 000, Oshikango Garage supported it with N.dollars 18 000 while Ondangwa-based SP Bricks Warehouse offered a sponsorship of N.dollars 67 000.
