WINDHOEK, 24 OCT (NAMPA) - The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) Secretary-General and Member of Parliament (MP), Jesaya Nyamu has strongly condemned and refuted local media reports that he quit the opposition political party.
Speaking at a media conference held at the RDP office at Parliament building here on Thursday, Nyamu said the media allegations are “mere fabricated naked lies” aimed at misleading the general Namibian public.
The reports he was referring to were carried by this news agency last week (17 October), and by local newspaper Confidénte on Thursday (24 October).
Nyamu said he never told the journalists of the two media houses during interviews with him that he has quit or is intending to leave the opposition political party.
“I have called the media to this press conference today to categorically refute the recent newspaper reports that I quit the RDP. I have never ever hinted to anybody or to the journalists of the two media houses (Nampa and Confidénte) that I intend to quit the RDP, the party of which I am founder member,” said the politician.
Nyamu explained that he told the journalists of the two media houses during interviews that come the second RDP Elective Convention in November 2013, he will not seek to be voted for in any RDP governing structures for personal and other related reasons.
“This position of not being available to be elected for any top position at the Convention, is not tantamount to my resignation from the party,” he stated, adding that he intends to serve the party as an ordinary member after completing his term of service as an RDP parliamentarian.
He said he has high respect for the integrity of the Namibian print media and 'I also realise that the print media exists to make profit for themselves, but I reject the idea that profit-making should be achieved by spreading naked lies and misleading the public”.
Nyamu seriously warned both media houses and the local journalists that “misleading the general Namibian public by spreading lies is a crime.”
The RDP politician, therefore, strongly called on Nampa and Confidénte to correct themselves and admit their mischief unconditionally.
“I am and I shall continue to be a loyal member of the RDP to my last days,” Nyamu noted.
Nyamu co-founded the RDP alongside party president Hidipo Hamutenya, Kandindima Nehova and Jeremia Nambinga in 2007.
Nyamu was a high-level member of the ruling Swapo-Party since 1964 until 2005 when he was expelled from the party for disobedience.
