Tip-off leads to arrest of suspected rhino poachers

WINDHOEK, 04 JUN (NAMPA) – Three men suspected of planning to hunt rhinos illegally were arrested in the Khorixas area on Friday.
They are set to appear in the Khorixas Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of hunting of specially protected game, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of live ammunition and conspiracy to commit a crime.
The Namibian Police Force’s crime investigations coordinator in Kunene, Deputy Commissioner Rudolf Kanyetu told Nampa on Sunday the men were dropped off with firearms near Farm Mesopotamie Friday night, allegedly to hunt rhinos.
They were spotted by the police after a tip-off and were arrested with the assistance of officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
Kanyetu said after their arrest, the suspects revealed the name of the person who sent them, who was then also arrested.
Two of the suspects are from Otjiwarongo and one from Khorixas.
Kanyetu thanked the community for assisting the police.
