WINDHOEK, 23 OCT (NAMPA) - President Hifikepunye Pohamba on Wednesday launched the new National Employment Policy during the opening the National Employment Conference in the capital.
“The new National Employment Policy is linked to our Industrial Policy with the aim of strengthening and mainstreaming the employment-creation dimension of the identified priority economic sectors,” Pohamba said.
The policy, he said, also focuses on modernisation of the agricultural sector and food production, systematic and targeted value addition, renewable energy generation and green jobs, housing and sanitation; Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and the transformation of the informal economy.
He called on the relevant ministries to implement their mandates with a specific focus on employment-creation.
The National Employment Policy was formulated to facilitate the implementation of specific interventions to achieve the objectives of the fourth National Development Plan (NDP4) and Vision 2030.
“I believe that the objective of this policy will only be achieved when all role-players take ownership thereof and implement the policy in a structured and co-ordinated manner,” the Head of State said.
He called upon the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare to provide policy direction and coordination as the custodian and secretariat for the implementation of the Employment Policy.
Pohamba pointed out to his audience that the Namibian nation is expecting the conference to come up with strong recommendations that would help the country to effectively combat unemployment, especially amongst the youth and women.
