RUNDU, 14 MAY (NAMPA) – The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare held a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a modern early childhood development centre (ECD) at Kaisosi informal settlement on Friday.
TX Foundation Company from Taiwan donated N. dollars 1.5 million for four centres to be built in four regions.
The regions are Kavango East, //Kharas, Otjozondjupa and Omusati.
“For years now the ministry has been trying to get funds to construct a modern ECD centre for this community as the structure that is already there is not up to standard,” ECD Deputy Director in the ministry Spendu Onesmus told Nampa in an interview.
Construction of the centre, she explained, will start before the end of the year.
The centre started with an intake of 50 children in 1999 and has 150 to date.
On her part, head of women at Kaisosi, Anselma Johannes said the construction of the centre is a gift to the community of Kaisosi that already has close to four ECD centres.
“In the past there used to be no pre–schools so we are thankful to our Namibian Government for the idea of implementing pre-schools.
“At a very early age of even three years our children can already express themselves in the English language,” she said.
Johannes said very often when a parent comes home from work and are greeted by their children in vernacular, they would ignore but would respond in excitement when greeted in English.
Pre-school, she explained, is the foundation of education and an important tool for every child to have.
