WINDHOEK, 26 APR (NAMPA) - The Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) national athletics championships are set for the Independence Stadium on Thursday and Friday.
A total of 150 athletes from all 14 regions are expected to compete.
Competition will start on Thursday at 12h00 with long distance running and field events.
The NSSU provides opportunities for learners to become involved in sports and physical recreational activities at primary and secondary school level in order for them to realise their full potential.
Speaking at the sponsorship handover by Coca-Cola Namibia on Tuesday, NSSU National Coordinator Solly Duiker called on the Namibian nation to support the young athletes.
“The winners plus runners-up at this event will represent the country in Zimbabwe next week at the Cossasa athletics champs in Harare,” he said.
Only 120 athletes will be selected to represent Namibia at the Confederation of School Sports Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) games from 01 to 07 May.
Duiker added that the NSSU was proud to see more than 1 000 athletes participating in regional championships, and this shows that more attention is being paid to athletes at grassroots level.
