Welwitschias lose to Valke

WINDHOEK, 23 APR (NAMPA) – The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias on Saturday lost their opening game of the 2017 SuperSport Rugby Challenge against the Valke from South Africa.
The match ended 33-50 at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park.
The 2017 SuperSport Rugby Challenge is the first edition of the secondary domestic rugby union competition in South Africa, and the long-term successor of the Vodacom Cup competition.
The competition is organised by the South African Rugby Union and is being played between 22 April and 16 July 2017. The competition will feature all 14 South African provincial unions plus Namibian side, the Welwitschias.
On Saturday afternoon in their opening match of the competition, the Namibians scored five tries through Gino Wilson, Lesley Klim, Maharua Katjijeko, Eugene Jantjies and Leneve Damens.
Theuns Kotze converted once from the spot. He also scored two penalties to give the Namibian side their 33 points on the day.
The home team scored seven tries on the day and converted six of them, plus a penalty to collect a bonus points on the day.
The Welwitschias currently have one point collected from a bonus point of the five tries they scored.
Their next game will be against the Blue Bulls on 29 April at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek.
The Bulls are currently on zero points after losing their opening game of the competition 23-31 against the Pumas.
The Namibia Rugby Union registered a team made up of only local players for the 2017 edition of the tournament.
