MARIENTAL, 22 APR (NAMPA) – A new hostel at Vooruitsig Combined School in Rehoboth will provide accommodation for 600 learners once it is completed in October 2019.
Director of Education in the Hardap Region, Mzingisi Gqwede told Nampa on Wednesday accommodation at the school was necessitated by the socio-economic circumstances of the learners.
“The mushrooming of shebeens, poverty and lack of accommodation led us to consider building a hostel,” Gqwede noted.
The hostel will accommodate 600 learners, including boys and girls from other schools in the town and those from the surrounding areas in need of accommodation.
Gqwede said learners’ performance is expected to improve once they have proper accommodation.
“The results will change for the better as learners will have a safe environment to study and sleep in and there won’t be any distractions during exams and school hours,” he said.
The construction of the N.dollars 64 million hostel by a joint venture between Abland Engineering and Construction and the Qin Jian International Group, started last month. It is being overseen by Gerrit Burger Architects.
Rehoboth has 11 schools in total, including three high schools and a private school. Only three of the schools have hostel facilities.
Vooruitsig Combined School has 968 learners and caters for Grades One to 10.
