WINDHOEK, 22 OCT(NAMPA)- A learner died at the Ella du Plessis Senior Secondary School in Khomasdal on Monday at about 19h00 when he was allegedly shot and killed by a security guard at the school premises.
The spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi confirmed the shooting incident that claimed the learner’s life upon enquiry from this agency on Tuesday morning.
According to Shikwambi, a group of male learners, including the victim, allegedly started provoking the security guard at about 19h00 on Monday evening for reasons only known to themselves.
During the alleged provocation, the victim - whose identity cannot be released at this stage as the police are yet to inform his next of kin - allegedly attacked the security guard with a bowl.
As a result of the alleged attack, the security guard took out his service pistol and allegedly shot the victim once through the head.
The 18-year-old learner, who was in Grade 10 at the school, died on the spot, Shikwambi explained.
The security guard was also arrested on Monday evening by the police shortly after the alleged shooting incident.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court along Mungunda Street in Katutura in the next few days.
Police investigations are now underway in order to establish the exact circumstances which led to the shooting and loss of life, noted Shikwambi.
