SWAKOPMUND, 18 APR (NAMPA) – The 17th edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup has been branded a success by organisers.
The tournament was hosted by the Erongo Region at the Vineta Sports Stadium in Swakopmund. All 14 regions took part in the four-day football jamboree.
Speaking at the conclusion of the tournament, Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua said is region did not win but everything went well and beyond their expectations.
“We had all the departments in terms of organisation and there were no incidents in and around the stadium,” he said.
Businesses ranging from accommodation to small enterprises benefited hugely from visitors from all over Namibia.
The governor stated that this year’s edition was the best ever, as evidenced by the number of people who attended the matches.
“Will are looking forward to hosting more events similar to this one as they afford our youth the opportunity to display their talent,” he added.
His views were echoed by General Manager of The Namibian newspaper, Sieggie Veii-Mujoro, who said they did not experience any serious challenges.
“We will sit down and see where we can improve, but we are happy with how the tournament went,” he said.
Barry Rukoro, the secretary-general of the Namibia Football Association, was equally happy with the organisation of this year’s tournament, saying the stadium was full every day of the four days.
“This competition has become a national activity, it is also an important competition,” he added.
Rukoro noted that the association identified talented players, whom they will nurture and develop.
“Some of them will be involved with our under 20 and under 23 teams in the near future,” he said.
He further called on the private and public sector to avail resources to develop coaches as well.
Otjozondjupa won this year’s tournament after beating Erongo 2-1 in the final on Monday. It is their third win.
