SWAKOPMUND, 14 APR (NAMPA) – Defending champions Oshana Region suffered a surprise defeat to perennial tournament under-achievers Zambezi Region by one goal to nil.
In a match played at the Vineta Sport Stadium in Swakopmund Friday morning, Zambezi scored the all-important goal through Oscar Machili in the ninth minute of the first half. Machili latched on to a through pass in the middle to beat an onrushing Jacob Paulus.
Action swung from one end to another, with Oshana pushing for an equaliser but the Zambezi defence stood resolute.
Twenty minutes into the second half Zambezi suffered a setback as their central defender Griffen Simataa was dismissed for a second yellow card, leaving his team to play out the match with 10 men.
Oshana failed to use their one-man advantage and the game ended one goal to nil, boosting Zambezi’s chances of qualifying into the next round.
Defeat to Oshana dealt them a heavy blow in their attempt to retain the title they won last year in Rundu, Kavango East Region.
Absalom Hatutale was named Man of the Match and received a cash prize of N.dollars 500 from the sponsors of the tournament, Nedbank and the Namibian Newspaper.
The next match will see host Erongo face-off with Kavango East.
