MARIENTAL, 12 APR (NAMPA) – The Hardap Region’s under 20 football team has finalised their preparations for the annual The Namibian Newspaper Cup showpiece slated for the coast this coming weekend.
The tournament will be hosted in Swakopmund in the Erongo Region from Friday until Monday.
Hardap is drawn in Group B alongside Omusati, defending champions Oshana and Zambezi.
Hardap won the competition in 2006 against their fiercest rivals and then host, //Kharas region and finished as runners-up in 2004 and 2005.
In preparation, the team played friendlies last weekend in Mariental against Hardap Second Division champions Reho Madrid; Young Beauties from the //Kharas Region and Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Football Club, which also plays in the Hardap Second Division.
Hardap won 2-0 against Young Beauties, beat NamPol 2-1 and defeated Reho Madrid 3-1.
Team manager Ivan Pieters told Nampa on Wednesday the team is ready to do battle and hope to go all the way to the final.
“If teams try to write us off they should do it at their own risk as it won’t be easy for them,” he said.
Pieters further stated that the team understands what is expected from them and the players know what is at stake.
“With the potential in Hardap it is mind-boggling as to how we are not winning it year in and year out. This time we are in it to win it,” Pieters noted.
The team leaves for Swakopmund on Wednesday.
