OTJIWARONGO, 12 APR (NAMPA) – The Otjozondjupa Region’s Under-20 football team that will participate in the 2017 The Namibian Newspaper Cup is aiming to go all the way to the final of the tournament.
This year’s Newspaper Cup starts on Friday and ends Monday at the Vineta Sports Stadium in Swakopmund.
The head coach of the region’s U-20 football team, Frans Kandundu told Nampa in an interview on Tuesday his boys are well prepared.
He said they have been in camp for the past two weeks to prepare for the tournament.
“Last week we practised once a day to establish where the players’ strengths lie,” said Kandundu.
During this week, the 20 members of the team trained twice a day.
Otjozondjupa has won the Newspaper Cup twice - in 2006 and 2013.
The team has so far played several friendly games against Otjiwarongo Football Club and Mighty Gunners as part of its preparations.
Mighty Gunner Football Club head coach Gerhardt Hengari, who watched the players practice at the Mokati Sports Stadium, expressed satisfaction with their physical fitness, accurate passes and confidence.
“The boys are strong, they only lack a reliable top front striker to score goals,” said Hengari.
The Otjozondjupa’s 2013 newspaper cup regional football head coach, Maradona Tsaose also complained of the lack of a striking force in the team.
“They need to reinforce the strikers or they won’t score goals,” he warned.
The Otjozondjupa team is expected to travel to Erongo for the tournament on Thursday.
