Khomas governor urges team to bring newspaper cup home

WINDHOEK, 11 APR (NAMPA) – Khomas Governor, Laura McLeod-Katjirua has instructed the region’s under-20 (U20) football team to win The Namibian Newspaper Cup scheduled for Swakopmund over the Easter weekend.
Speaking during a kit donation handover at her office on Tuesday, the governor said pressure is on the Khomas Region to win the trophy this year.
“All the regions would like to beat you because you are from the capital, and I urge you not to underestimate any of your opponents because you come from the capital city.”
She urged the City of Windhoek, Khomas Regional Council and the governor’s office to coordinate efforts and find a permanent sponsor to support the team annually.
This follows reports that last year they did not have a kit during the tournament in Rundu and players wore different colours.
McLeod-Katjirua also touched on the importance of discipline, saying she would not want to receive reports of the team misbehaving, saying the players are going to represent the region.
“That is all I want you to focus on. Do the right things at the right time and always avoid the wrongs,” she said.
Team captain, Tuhafeni Leonard said they prepared well and are looking forward to improving the performance of last year’s team, who lost in the final against Oshikoto.
“They set a bar and we cannot afford to lower that bar. We will go there with only one outcome in mind and that is representing the region well and winning the trophy,” he said.
This is the 17th The Namibian Newspaper Cup, which Khomas won four times, with the most recent victory being in 2011.
