WINDHOEK, 06 APR (NAMPA) – Namibia’s national rugby team, the Welwitschias and the Under-20 team will participate in friendly matches in preparation for the SuperSport Rugby Challenge and Rugby Africa Barthes U-20 Trophy later this year.
In a media statement availed to Nampa on Wednesday, the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) said both teams will play against invitational Namibian teams made up of players from all clubs in the NRU domestic league.
As many of the invitational players will still want to prove that they deserve a spot in the national squads, this should produce some spectacular rugby.
The games will be played at the Hage Geingob Stadium on 12 April starting at 18h00. Entrance is free.
The coaches for these teams will be Johan Diergaardt and Shawn Kaizemi, with Flip Louw as the team manager and Gerald Loubser as the invitational coach of the U-20 team.
The SuperSport Rugby Challenge competition is organised by the South African Rugby Union and will take place between 22 April and 16 July 2017.
The competition will feature all 14 South African provincial unions plus Namibian side, the Welwitschias.
This will be the first edition of the SuperSport Rugby Challenge.
The Rugby Africa Barthes U-20 Trophy is a tournament for junior players which was previously known as the Africa Under-19 Trophy. The age limit has however been increased from 19 to 20.
