WINDHOEK, 20 OCT (NAMPA) – Tragedy struck on Friday evening when seven people died and seven others injured in a road accident in Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region.
The accident happened at about 19h00 on the Wenela main road near the University of Namibia (Unam) Katima Mulilo campus, when the Toyota pick-up the deceased and injured were travelling in left the road and overturned.
“The driver lost control,” said Inspector Stephan Nuuyi of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Public Relations Division during a media briefing here on Sunday.
Five persons died on the spot, and two died at the Katima Mulilo State Hospital. Seven others were also admitted to the same hospital.
“Those injured are still struggling for their lives,” Nuuyi said.
He said the group of people, mainly minor children, were coming from a party at the riverside.
The deceased are yet to be identified, and police investigations continue.
In an unrelated case in the Erongo Region, a man was shot and killed by the police after he and seven other suspects were found stealing scrap metal.
The incident took place on Saturday at about 00h40 at the Salvage Scrap Metal Yard.
“The police were alerted about the incident and when they arrived at the scene, they found the thieves still in action unaware of their presence.
The police then fired some warning shots, and the thieves began to flee in different directions,” said Nuuyi.
In the process, one of the thieves was killed, three were arrested and four others managed to escape.
A murder case has been opened against the police, while a theft case was opened against the suspects.
The deceased has not yet been identified, and police investigations continue.
