WINDHOEK, 02 APR (NAMPA) – The University of Namibia (UNAM) Rugby Team grabbed a last gasp win to beat an otherwise dominant Wanderers in the 2017 Namibia Club Rugby Season at UNAM Sports Field on Saturday.
The win is the fourth for them this season following success against Western Suburbs, Kudus, and Rehoboth.
Wanderers were the first to settle down and score two quick tries to give them the lead against UNAM.
Trailing by 31 points to 20, UNAM scored two late tries and converted one of them to win the match with a bonus point.
Wanderers, who also got two bonus points for losing by less than seven points and scoring four tries, could have won the game after they were awarded a penalty in the last minute of play but failed to convert it.
The final score was 32 to 31 points for UNAM.
The win puts the university team at a comfortable position of retaining their title for the third time in row, as they remain the only unbeaten team on the log.
UNAM Coach, Johan Diergaardt praised his team saying they showed great character.
“I always believe in these boys as they have proven time and again to come back from the jaws of defeat and win matches,” he said adding that they were now looking forward to playing against Trustco United next week.
Meanwhile, Western Suburbs beat Trustco United by 23 points to 17 to remain within sight of the log leaders in an exciting clash that was interrupted by Deverux Jansen breaking his leg at the stroke of halftime.
Suburbs’ coach paid tribute to his attacking players, while noting that his team’s defensive frailties were once again exposed.
“We need to improve our line outs and scrummaging as it is becoming a problem for us. We have the flair and skills but we need to improve on the physical aspect of the game,” said Rudolf Witbooi.
His opposite number, Jood Opperman acknowledged his team’s failure to take opportunities while lamenting the mistakes they made.
“We played our best game this season. We will learn from this. We struggled with reaction time so we must work hard on that.”
Below are the results for the weekend matches:
UNAM 32 - Wanderers 31.
Walvis Bay 56 - Reho Falcons 0.
Kudus 46 - Rehoboth 46.
Western Suburbs 23 - Trustco United 17.
