REHOBOTH, 24 MAR (NAMPA) – Zamalek Football Club (FC) from Kalkrand Village in the Hardap Region will host its first ever football tournament next month.
Kalkrand is situated about 74 kilometres north of Mariental on the B1 road leading to Rehoboth.
The Kalkrand Soccer Bonanza will take place on 01 and 02 April. It is anticipated that it becomes an annual event.
It is open for Second Division and non-league teams, with each team allowed to use three First Division and two Namibia Premier League players during matches.
Organiser and team manager of Zamalek FC and Untouchables FC, Morné Brandt on Wednesday said the tournament is organised to generate money for Untouchables.
He said Untouchables need to ease the financial burden of playing in the Hardap Region Football Association (HARFA) Second Division.
Some Zamalek players play for Untouchables.
Brandt said in order to play in an organised league, one needs sponsors to be able to maintain a team.
“With this in mind we resolved to organise this tournament to assist Untouchables FC during the upcoming soccer season,” Brandt noted.
Untouchables FC bought the status of Southern Stream First Division (SSFD) campaigners Hardap Boys at the end of last season.
Brandt urged businesspeople in Hardap to invest in football and keep players off the street and away from crimes.
“With the help of businesses, we will be able to compete with the best and keep the young men focused,” he said.
The winner will receive N.dollars 8 000 in cash, a trophy and 18 gold medals.
Runners-up will walk away with N.dollars 4 000 and 18 silver medals.
Semi-final losers will get N.dollars 1500 each.
Registration fee is N.dollars 1 250 per team, which closes on 30 March.
After the registration the draw will follow on 31 March in Kalkrand.
