RUNDU, 20 MAR (NAMPA) – All accommodation facilities at Rundu in the Kavango East Region are fully occupied, but more people are still making their way to the region for the 27th Independence celebrations on Tuesday.
About 13 000 people are expected to attend the celebrations at the Rundu Sports Stadium, including 1 500 invited dignitaries.
There are about 25 lodges, guest houses, bed and breakfast establishments and one hotel in Rundu.
Chief Regional Officer for the Kavango East Regional Council, Ludwig Thikusho told Nampa on Monday, the council was now relying on home owners to accommodate guests who are still travelling to the town.
Some visitors have opted to sleep in tents, provided they are given space where they can erect these structures.
“The celebration taking place in the Kavango East Region this year for us means integration of the Namibian nation in the region,” said Thikusho.
It takes place under the theme ‘United we stand, For the love of Namibia’.
National airline, Air Namibia, increased its flights to Rundu to four daily flights until 22 March.
Thikusho indicated that there was no interference thus far from activists who allegedly plan to boycott the event.
