WINDHOEK, 10 MAR (NAMPA) - Jandre Jacques de Klerk, who stands accused of raping and killing a 13-year-old girl in 2014, was denied bail in the Windhoek High Court on Thursday.
The 27-year-old De Klerk is charged with murder, two counts of rape and one count of housebreaking with intent to rape.
“The public cannot be left at the mercy of merciless criminals where neither the police nor the courts can effectively protect them,” Judge Christie Liebenberg said before dismissing De Klerk’s bail application.
He was arrested on 24 October 2014 in connection with the rape and death of Rachel Vanessa Boois in Henties Bay between 03 and 04 May 2014.
De Klerk allegedly also inserted a stick into her private parts before killing her.
He has thus far denied any wrongdoing.
“It is evident that this young child died a brutal and horrific death,” said Liebenberg.
De Klerk has another case of rape pending. He allegedly forced himself onto a woman in a shack that he is said to have broken into in Henties Bay between 13 and 14 June 2013.
It is alleged that he took advantage of the fact that the accused was intoxicated and had no knowledge of the act.
He allegedly then went on to assault his then girlfriend, the mother of his child.
De Klerk’s trial will start on 23 March.
Joseph Mbaiwa represented the accused and Prosecutor Antonia Verhoef appeared for the State.
