Fistball league kicks off this weekend

WINDHOEK, 06 MAR (NAMPA) – The national fistball league is scheduled to kick off over the weekend with games in the A and B league set to take place at Sports Klub Windhoek (SKW) on Saturday.
The first games of the Bank Windhoek-sponsored league will start at 08h30, with a new game mode that will be tested in the national category A this season.
Only three teams, SKW 1 and 2 and Cohen Fistball Club (CFC), signed up for the National League A again this year.
CFC 1 are currently the Bank Windhoek Fistball Tournament A-division trophy holders. They have won the league two years in a row.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, Fistball Association of Namibia (FAN) public relations officer Helmo Minz said the association agreed on a new play mode for the elite category to ensure more tension and game time for the teams concerned.
He added that each team will play against each opponent twice in a given league round. “Each match consists of three sets of 11 points and each set win secures one point, for example a team can win 3:0 or 2:1, or vice versa. This differs to the previous mode of play where the best of nine sets was applied,” he said.
In the national league category B, the mode of play remains the same as in previous seasons. Defending champions Swakopmund FC from Swakopmund and the winners of the opening tournament of the fistball season a month ago, SKW 2, are still the top favourites to win the title this year.
Other teams that will compete in category B are Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS), CFC 4 and CFC 3.
Mainz also stated that in August, CFC will travel to Switzerland to compete in an annual fistball tournament that will see over 100 teams compete amongst each other.
“Playing at this tournament will allow CFC to gain more exposure and experience of playing at international level, which will be good for the players,” he said.
