KEETMANSHOOP, 16 OCT (NAMPA) – The Karasburg District Court on Friday granted bail of N.dollars 100 000 to a 33-year-old man accused of possession of dagga worth N.dollars 830 000.
Vilho Nghuukungumo Heita was arrested by the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) on 22 September this year near Karasburg on his way from South Africa while transporting 277 kilogrammes of dagga on the truck he was driving.
Speaking to Nampa upon enquiry on Wednesday, NamPol’s //Karas Regional Commander, Commissioner Armas Shivute confirmed the bail amount, saying the suspect did not post bail yet and is still in police custody.
“We are satisfied with the bail amount given. We even suggested N.dollars 150 000, but he was lucky the court reduced it.
The reason is to send out a message that those who are dealing in drugs here will be convicted and punished severely,” the //Karas commander told this news agency.
Heita's defence lawyer, Percy McNally, is expected to request the District Court next week to reduce the bail amount for his client to at least N.dollars 40 000.
Shivute once again used the opportunity to thank members of the public who continue to notify the police about drug dealers, leading to successful arrests.
