WINDHOEK, 03 FEB (NAMPA) – Children who benefit from social welfare grants under the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare will still get their monthly allowance, despite the ministry experiencing budget cuts.
This was said by the Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Doreen Sioka at the ministry’s staff new year address here on Friday.
About 242 101 children were in 2016 recorded to be receiving the N.dollars 250 social welfare grant from Government every month.
The ministry, according to Sioka, is planning to add 20 000 new children to the grant system during its 2017/18 financial year.
“The mandate is to promote and protect the well-being of all children in Namibia in order for them to become responsible citizens who will contribute to the social and economic development of the country,” she explained.
However, the minister warned that those found to be misusing the grants will have their benefits suspended until a more responsible family member is identified.
“People who spend on themselves instead of spending the money on the children should be reported to our offices and we will deal with them,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, Sioka also announced that the ministry has recorded about 72 000 children enrolled in Early Childhood Development Centres throughout the country, compared to 37 000 children enrolled in previous years.
